|
Everyone needs to establish a relationship
with an Internal Medicine physician on or around the age of 35. They should consider starting
a relationship earlier if they have a family history of chronic conditions such as heart disease,
cancer, hypertension, etc. An Internal Medicine physician will follow you thoughout your
life and closely monitor your annual physicals as well as handle acute illnesses such as the common
cold, strep throat, etc.
The formal definition of an Internal Medicine
physician is a doctor whom provides long term, comprehensive care in the office and the
hospital (and the nursing home in some situations), managing both common and complex illnesses
of adolescents, adults and the elderly. Internists are trained in the diagnosis
and treatment of cancer, infections and diseases, affecting the heart, blood, kidneys, joints,
digestive, respiratory and vascular systems.
