Kim Wernel, RD, LD, CDE

Kim Wernel is a Registered Dietitian specializing in diabetes education with her Certified Diabetes Educator certification.  She believes in trying to incorporate diabetes into a patient’s life and not making their life revolve around their diabetes.

She has bachelor’s degree in Dietetics from the University of Central Missouri and did her internship at the Indiana University Medical Center in Indianapolis.  Her first job was at Research Medical Center as a dietitian filling in for all clinical areas that helped provide a strong knowledge base of all areas of chronic conditions.

Ms Wernel helped open The Harmon Diabetes Center in 1986 on the Research Medical Center campus and helped provide education to the Type 2 and Gestational Diabetes programs.  She has also had experience in weight management with the Energy Balance Lab at The University of Kansas where she learned to help patients set goals to make lifestyle changes to form healthier behaviors.  Kim developed and implemented “The Weigh To Be” weight management program to help patients with diabetes lose weight by making those lifestyle changes with support and accountability.

Ms Wernel has also been the director of The Cray Diabetes Center at Kansas University Medical Center for diabetes education helping patients understand their diabetes and learn self management skills to promote life long health with diabetes.
